About PNM files
Netpbm is a family of very simple image formats: PBM for black and white, PGM for greyscale and PPM for colour, collectively called PNM. PAM is the newer, more flexible variant. They are common in scientific software, image processing courses and command-line tools.
Open Online decodes the pixels itself, in text and binary form, with 8 and 16 bits per channel, and lets you zoom in on single pixels or save the picture as a PNG.
What you can do here
- Zoom with the mouse wheel or buttons and drag to move
- Pixels stay sharp when you zoom in
- See size, colour mode and depth
- Save the picture as a PNG
Limitations
- Only the picture itself is shown, no extra metadata.
Privacy
The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy
Common questions
Why can’t my browser open these files?
Browsers only support common web formats such as PNG and JPEG. Netpbm files are uncompressed pixel data that no browser displays.
Are 16-bit images supported?
Yes. They are shown with 8 bits per channel, which is what screens can display.
Can I save the image as PNG?
Yes. Use the “Save as PNG” button in the toolbar.
