Privacy

Short version: the files you open on Open Online are processed in your browser and are not uploaded. There is no analytics, no advertising and no account.

1. Files you open

When you open a file on Open Online, your browser reads it from your device and the viewer runs in the same browser tab. Open Online has no upload endpoint and no server-side processing: the file is not sent to us or to anyone else.

Opened files are held in the tab’s memory only. They are not written to cookies, localStorage, IndexedDB or the offline cache, and they are gone when you close or reload the tab. Edited copies are only saved if you choose “Save copy”, in which case your browser downloads them to your device.

The “Overview” feature is computed on your device with simple counting rules. No document content is sent to an AI service or any other external service.

Some files can contain references to content on the internet, for example remote images in an HTML or Markdown file. The site’s content security policy blocks such requests, so opening a file does not contact other servers.

2. Visiting the website

The website is a set of static files hosted on GitHub Pages, a service of GitHub, Inc. (USA). When you load a page, your browser sends a request to GitHub’s servers. Like any web server, GitHub processes technical data to deliver the page and keep the service secure, in particular your IP address, the requested address, date and time, and your browser’s user agent. GitHub may store this data in server logs. We have no access to these logs and do not use them.

This processing is necessary to deliver the website and is based on our legitimate interest in providing a working and secure site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). GitHub may process data in the USA. More information is available in the GitHub General Privacy Statement (opens in a new tab).

3. No cookies, analytics or advertising

Open Online does not set cookies, does not use analytics or tracking tools, does not show advertising and has no user accounts. Fonts and all program code are served from the site itself; no content delivery networks or third-party services are contacted.

4. Offline use

To work offline and load faster, the site registers a service worker that stores the application’s own files (code, styles, icons) in your browser’s cache. This cache never contains files you open. You can remove it at any time by clearing the site data in your browser settings.

5. Links to aintob.com and other sites

Open Online links to aintob.com (opens in a new tab) for converting files. aintob.com is a separate service with its own privacy policy, and its practices may differ from those described here. Nothing is sent to aintob.com unless you follow the link and use that site.

6. Contact and your rights

The party responsible for this website is listed in the imprint. You can reach us at open-online@dittes.info.

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectification, erasure and restriction of processing of your personal data, the right to data portability and the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. Since Open Online itself does not collect personal data, requests concerning hosting logs may have to be directed to GitHub.
