About HEIC files

HEIC is the format iPhones use for photos by default. It stores images at about half the size of a JPEG of the same quality.

Safari can display HEIC directly. Other browsers can’t decode it yet; there, Open Online still shows the photo’s details and camera data and links to a converter.

What you can do here

  • Zoom with the mouse wheel or buttons, drag to pan
  • Switch between fit to screen and actual pixels
  • Transparent areas shown on a checkerboard
  • Rotate or flip, and save the result as a new file
  • Read camera data (EXIF): camera, lens, exposure, date and GPS position

Limitations

  • Only Safari can display the image itself. Other browsers show the file details.
  • Saving a rotated or flipped copy re-encodes the image and drops its EXIF data.

Privacy

The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy

Common questions

How do I turn HEIC into JPG?

aintob.com converts HEIC to JPG or PNG in the browser. On an iPhone, you can also set Camera › Formats to “Most Compatible”.

Why does it work in Safari only?

HEIC uses the HEVC codec, which other browsers don’t ship for images.
