About BMP files

BMP is the classic uncompressed bitmap format from Windows. Files are large but simple, and some older software and devices still produce them.

All browsers can display BMP, and Open Online adds zoom, rotation and file details.

What you can do here

  • Zoom with the mouse wheel or buttons, drag to pan
  • Switch between fit to screen and actual pixels
  • Transparent areas shown on a checkerboard
  • Rotate or flip, and save the result as a new file
  • Read camera data (EXIF): camera, lens, exposure, date and GPS position

Limitations

  • Saving a rotated or flipped copy re-encodes the image and drops its EXIF data.

Privacy

The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy

Common questions

Why is the file so large?

BMP usually stores every pixel without compression. Converting to PNG keeps all detail at a fraction of the size.

Can I convert BMP to PNG?

Rotate or flip it here and save a PNG copy, or use aintob.com’s BMP converter.
