About NPY files

NPY is NumPy’s native format for saving a single array. Data scientists use it for datasets, model weights and intermediate results in Python. A .npz file is a ZIP archive of several .npy arrays, and opens here as an archive.

Open Online reads the header and the numbers in your browser, so you can check an array’s shape and values without starting Python. It shows summary statistics and a table of values, with a slider through the slices of arrays that have three or more dimensions.

What you can do here

  • See shape, data type and number of elements
  • Minimum, maximum and mean of numeric arrays
  • Browse values as a table, with row and column numbers
  • Step through slices of arrays with three or more dimensions

Limitations

  • Only the first rows and columns are shown.
  • Object and structured arrays can’t be previewed.
  • Complex numbers are shown without statistics.

Privacy

The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy

Common questions

Which data types are supported?

Integers, unsigned integers, floating point numbers (16, 32 and 64 bit), booleans, complex numbers and text strings, in either byte order, in C or Fortran layout.

What about .npz files?

They are ZIP archives. Open Online lists the arrays inside and opens each one as an .npy file.

Can it show object or structured arrays?

No. Arrays of Python objects or with named fields need Python to be read safely and are not previewed.
