About TXT files
A .txt file holds plain text with no formatting. Notes, lists, exported data and README files are often plain text.
Open Online detects the character encoding (UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252), shows line numbers and lets you edit and save a copy.
What you can do here
- Line numbers and syntax highlighting
- Search and replace
- Toggle word wrap
- Edit the text and save a copy
- See encoding, line endings, line and word counts
Limitations
- Very large files (over 50 MB) open read-only to keep the browser responsive.
Privacy
The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy
Common questions
Why do some characters look wrong?
The file may use an encoding that can’t be detected reliably. Open Online tries UTF-8 first and falls back to Windows-1252. The detected encoding is shown under File info.
How do I save my changes?
Use Save copy. Your browser downloads the edited text as a new file; the original on your device is not changed.
