About EML files
EML is the standard file format for a single e-mail message. Mail programs such as Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird save messages as .eml when you drag them to a folder or choose “Save as”.
Open Online reads the message locally: sender, recipients, date, text, HTML version, inline images and attachments. Nothing is sent anywhere, and remote images and scripts in the message are never loaded.
What you can do here
- Read the message with its sender, recipients and date
- See and download attachments, or open them in the matching viewer
- Inline images appear in the message
- Browse all messages of an mbox file
- Check the full headers and the raw source
Limitations
- Scripts, styles and remote images are blocked, so some newsletters look plainer than in a mail app.
- Encrypted (S/MIME) and digitally signed content is not decoded.
Privacy
The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy
Common questions
Can I open the attachments?
Yes. Attachments are listed above the message. Open them in the matching viewer or download them.
Why do images from the web not show?
Remote images can reveal that you opened the message, so they are blocked. Images embedded in the message itself are shown.
Can I open a whole mailbox?
Yes. Files in the mbox format, such as Thunderbird folders and Google Takeout exports, list all messages on the left.
