About DOCX files

DOCX is the default format of Microsoft Word since 2007. Inside, it is a ZIP archive of XML files that describe the text, styles, images and page settings. Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages can all save it.

Open Online lays the document out on pages in your browser. You can read and search it, and see who wrote it and when.

What you can do here

  • Read the document on page-like sheets
  • Zoom in and out
  • Search the text
  • See title, author, dates, word count and the app that created it
  • Get an overview of headings and frequent terms

Limitations

  • Layout is close to Word but not identical. Complex tables, text boxes and some fonts may look different.
  • Tracked changes and comments are not shown.
  • Embedded charts, equations and SmartArt may be missing.

Privacy

The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy

Common questions

Will the document look exactly like in Word?

Close, but not always identical. Word’s layout engine is not available outside Word, so line breaks, page breaks and complex objects can differ. The text itself is complete.

Can I open old .doc files?

Not yet. The older binary .doc format (Word 97–2003) needs a different parser. Converting it to DOCX or PDF with aintob.com works.

Are macros run?

No. Macro-enabled documents (.docm) can be viewed, but macros are never executed.
