About LaTeX files

LaTeX is a typesetting system widely used for scientific papers, theses and books. A .tex file is plain text with commands such as \section and \begin that a LaTeX program turns into a PDF.

Open Online shows the source with syntax highlighting and line numbers, and lets you search and edit it. It does not compile the document.

What you can do here

  • Line numbers and syntax highlighting
  • Search and replace
  • Toggle word wrap
  • Edit the text and save a copy
  • See encoding, line endings, line and word counts

Limitations

  • Very large files (over 50 MB) open read-only to keep the browser responsive.

Privacy

The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy

Common questions

Can I see the finished PDF?

No. Turning a .tex file into a PDF needs a LaTeX installation such as TeX Live, or an online editor like Overleaf. Open Online shows the source only.

Do .sty and .cls files open too?

Yes. Style and class files (.sty, .cls) and .ltx files are treated the same way. Bibliography files (.bib) open as plain text.
