About ZIP files
ZIP is the most common archive format. It bundles many files and folders into one, usually compressed. Many other formats, such as JAR, APK and CBZ, are ZIP archives with a different extension.
Open Online reads only the archive’s directory first, so even very large archives list instantly. Files are decompressed one at a time when you open them.
What you can do here
- Browse folders and files
- See sizes, compressed sizes and dates
- Search file names
- Preview text and images, or open any file in the matching viewer
- Download single files
- Extract everything to a folder (Chrome and Edge)
Limitations
- Encrypted entries and rare compression methods (LZMA, BZIP2) can be listed but not opened.
Privacy
The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy
Common questions
Can I open a single file from the archive?
Yes. Click it to preview it, or open it in the matching viewer: a PDF in the PDF viewer, a spreadsheet in the spreadsheet viewer and so on.
Are password-protected ZIPs supported?
They can be listed, but encrypted files inside can’t be opened yet.
Is it safe to open a ZIP from an unknown source?
Nothing in the archive is run. Open Online also refuses to decompress entries that would grow suspiciously large (so-called zip bombs).
