About MPEG files

MPEG program streams are the format of Video CDs, DVDs (VOB files) and many older camcorders. The files usually hold MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with MP2 or AC-3 sound.

Browsers can’t play them. Open Online decodes MPG, MPEG and VOB files with a built-in player inside the page.

What you can do here

  • Play the file with your browser’s player, or with Open Online’s built-in player for AVI, WMV, FLV, MPEG and TS
  • See resolution, duration and codecs
  • Watch in full screen

Limitations

  • Whether a file plays depends on the codecs your browser supports. For AVI, WMV, FLV, MPEG and TS files the built-in player opens the container, your browser decodes H.264, HEVC and AAC (a recent Chrome, Edge or Safari is needed), and built-in decoders cover older codecs such as MPEG-1/2/4, WMV, AC-3 and DTS.
  • Older codecs are decoded on your processor, so large high-resolution files in those may skip frames. Nothing is transcoded or uploaded.

Privacy

The file is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open Online has no server that could receive it, and nothing is stored once you close the tab. Privacy policy

Common questions

Can I open a whole DVD?

No. Open Online plays one file at a time. DVD menus, subtitles and angles are not supported, and copy-protected discs can’t be read.

Does the MPEG-2 video look sharp?

It is shown at its original resolution. Standard-definition DVD video plays smoothly on most computers.
